Introduction to SQL Server Administration is an introductory level course designed to provide the core skills required for DBA's or to provide a better understanding of database administration for database developers, business intellegence developers or SQL Server web developers.

This 1-day course is instructor led with hands on lab sessions taking you through following modules:

Introduction to SQL Server

This module will provide an introduction to Microsoft SQL Server giving you an overview of:

  • Where SQL Server has come from
  • The different tools available to assist in managing your SQL Server environments,
  • How you can connect to your SQL Server environments
  • The different types of statements available for you to use
  • Where you can get help from

Installing and Configuring SQL Server

This module takes you through the various components that you can choose from when performing an installation of SQL Server as well as giving you an insight into the types of things you need to consider in preparing for an installation of SQL Server. In this module we will consider the following:

  • Prerequisites
  • Installation Options
  • Service Accounts
  • Post Configuration tasks

Administering databases

This module we look more closely at the different database types you will need to manage in your SQL Server environment. We will have a look at the various components that make up a database and how we can create and delete databases in our environments.

Administering Security

This module we look at the different types of security that we need to apply and how these can assist in ensuring that our SQL Server environment is secure. This module will cover the following topics:

  • Login Accounts
  • User Accounts
  • Roles
  • Database Access
  • Permissions

Backup and Recovery

Backup and Recovery is a very important aspect to understand when managing a SQL Server database environment. If we are not able to recover from a disaster of some kind this could have some serious outcomes. In this module we will have a look at:

  • Why Backup
  • Recovery Models
  • Backup Types
  • Backup Processes
  • Restore Processes

Troubleshooting

Murphy's law states "Anything that can go wrong will go wrong" this applies to your SQL Server database environment. As such as a DBA we need to be able to identify and locate issues and determine how to resolve those issues. In this module we will have a look at where we can start to investigate issues that may occur in our SQL Server environment.
